Facebook reminded me that I left my hometown 5 years ago.
I consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to teach Brown & Black children. It's especially a privilege when I teach them together.
On the playground, my Mexican students would share with me that they were offended when teachers referred to them as "Latino." One student told me he felt like teachers were "hating on him" when they didn't acknowledge that he was Mexican.
They were also offended when they believed other Mexican students were culturally appropriating and referred to them as "Whitesican" & "Blacksican" when they did not show pride in being Mexican.
Although some students used this as an insult, my Black & Mexican students would jokingly attempt to reclaim "Blacksican". On Cinco De Mayo I reflect and celebrate for them.
From a Blasian, Blacksicans, I see you.
